Reflexology is an Art and a Science
Throughout history various cultures have utilized the feet as a means of affecting the body and its health. Reflexology is an art and science based on the principle that there are reflexes on the feet that correspond to every system, organ and tissue of the body. These reflex points can be stimulated using an organized, systematic application of pressure and techniques which may facilitate the body’s own healing ability. The simple theory of reflexology is based on enhancing energy flow through all parts of the body. It is a gentle and non-invasive form of relaxation that promotes balance of the body, mind and spirit.
The combination of relaxation and reflex techniques can interrupt the cycles of stress and create new, healthier cycles of energy through your own autonomic nervous system. Benefits may include, (but not be limited to):
Relaxation
Stress Reduction
Improved Energy Flow Throughout the Body
Enhanced Circulation
Increased Range of Motion
Relief from Stiff or Sore Feet
Promotion of General Well-being
Systematic combination of pressure point therapy (acupressure) and massage techniques can be applied to feet, as well as hands, and/or ears. Science has found that the skin over acupressure points has a higher electrical conductivity than the surrounding area, which when activated promotes the release of endorphins from the brain. When there is stagnation of the vital energy in the body, it is experienced as pain, stiffness, or weakness. When there is free, harmonious flow of vital energy in the body, it is felt as relaxed, balanced sense of wellbeing.
While the feet the hands and the ears all contain reflex points, the feet are generally more receptive and the reflex points more accessible. With each foot having over 7000 nerve endings, 26 bones, 107 ligaments and 19 muscles–– it feels great! Our feet also take a lot of abuse, are much depended on, and don’t get the attention they deserve until they hurt. Then it can be difficult to think about anything else!
There is nothing more empowering than taking charge and responsibility for one’s own health. Nutrition, exercise, stress management all play central roles. Reflexology holds the potential to ease any situation that has a component of stress associated with it and if we think about it…what doesn’t? Allergies, asthma, insomnia, gastrointestinal issues, anxiety, migraines, muscular discomfort and more.
A session is designed to induce a relax response allowing tension to release muscles, tissues to soften and loosen. Blood, lymphatic fluids and qi (your vital energy) circulate more freely making way for these essential substances and all their healing capacities to get to the body’s cells in the amount needed to create balance of energy.
Reflexology is so much more than a foot massage!
